Pliny the Elder was born in modern-day Italy in 23 AD and served as a military officer in the Roman army before devoting himself to his scholarly pursuits. He was appointed as a procurator (administrator) in Hispania, where he began compiling his monumental encyclopedia. The "Naturalis Historia" covers a wide range of topics, including astronomy, geography, zoology, botany, pharmacology, mineralogy, and anthropology. It aimed to provide a comprehensive summary of the knowledge available at that time.
Pliny's work was a compilation of various sources, including his personal observations, accounts from others, and existing literature.
