PLAS, an acronym for "Public Land Survey System," refers to a method of land division used in the United States to systematically plan and categorize land within the country. PLAS was originally established by the federal government to facilitate the orderly settlement and sale of public lands.
The PLAS system divides land into a pattern of square-shaped units referred to as townships. Each township measures six miles by six miles, resulting in a total area of 36 square miles. These townships are further divided into smaller units referred to as sections, each measuring one square mile or 640 acres. In turn, sections may be divided into even smaller parcels of land, providing a detailed and organized structure for land ownership and management.
