The principle behind its operation lies in the fact that when a fluid flows through the open end of the tube, it creates a dynamic pressure due to its motion. This dynamic pressure is combined with the static pressure, which represents the pressure of the fluid when it is not in motion, to yield the total pressure.
By measuring this total pressure, the pitot head can determine the fluid velocity by employing Bernoulli's principle, which states that as the velocity of a fluid increases, its pressure decreases. The difference between the total pressure and the static pressure is converted into a velocity measurement, providing an accurate depiction of the fluid's speed.
