There are three species of peccaries: the collared peccary (Tayassu tajacu), the white-lipped peccary (Tayassu pecari), and the Chacoan peccary (Catagonus wagneri).
Peccaries are characterized by their stocky build, with a robust body and a large head. They have short, sharp tusks that project from their lower jaw, which they use for defense and foraging. Their fur is coarse and bristly, typically ranging in color from dark gray to brown. They typically have a distinct collar of white fur around their neck, which gives the collared peccary its name.
Peccaries are omnivorous, feeding on a varied diet that includes grasses, fruits, nuts, and even small animals like insects, reptiles, and birds. They are highly social creatures, living in herds or groups known as "squadrons," which can range in size from a few individuals to over a hundred.
These animals play an important ecological role as seed dispersers, as the undigested seeds they consume are spread through their feces. However, peccaries can also be considered pests as they sometimes raid crops or damage gardens. Despite their pig-like appearance, peccaries are not closely related to domestic pigs or boars. They are unique and specialized animals that have adapted to their diverse environments in the Americas.

Etymology of PECCARIES
The word peccaries is derived from the Spanish term pecaríes, which itself originated from the Tupi-Guaraní language of South America. The Tupi-Guaraní word for peccary is pekari or pike-ri. This term was then adopted into Spanish when Europeans encountered these animals during their exploration of the Americas. Eventually, English followed suit and adopted the term peccaries.
