Pearl River refers to a major river in southern China, known as the third longest river in the country and the largest one in terms of water flow in Guangdong province. Also known as Zhujiang in Chinese, the river stretches for approximately 2,200 kilometers (1,400 miles) and flows through the provinces of Yunnan, Guangxi, Guangdong, as well as the autonomous regions of Guangxi Zhuang and the Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong.
The Pearl River receives its name from the large number of freshwater pearls that could be found in its waters historically. The river plays a significant role in connecting several important cities, including Nanning, Wuzhou, Guangzhou, Foshan, Zhongshan, Zhuhai, and Macau. Its drainage basin covers an extensive area of approximately 437,000 square kilometers (169,000 square miles).
