Pear hawthorn, scientifically known as Crataegus × persimilis 'Prunifolia', is a small deciduous tree belonging to the Rosaceae family. It is a hybrid species resulting from a cross between two different hawthorns, namely Crataegus rhipidophylla and Crataegus × prunifolia.
The pear hawthorn tree typically reaches a height of 15 to 20 feet with an equal spread, forming a dense, rounded crown when mature. The dark green leaves are simple, alternate, and have a serrated edge, resembling those of pear trees, hence its common name. In spring, the tree blossoms with abundant clusters of showy white flowers, creating an attractive spectacle. These flowers give way to small, pear-shaped fruits, measuring around 1/2 inch in diameter, which start out green but gradually turn red or orange as they ripen.
Pear hawthorn trees are primarily cultivated for their ornamental value in gardens and landscapes due to their beautiful flowers and pleasant fall foliage. They are adaptable to different soil types and tolerant of drought once established, making them relatively low-maintenance trees. While the fruits are edible, they are not commonly consumed due to their small size and astringent taste.
