Paraphimosis is a medical condition that involves the retracted foreskin of the penis, whereby it becomes trapped behind the glans and is unable to be returned to its original position. This condition typically occurs in males who are not circumcised or who have a tight or narrow foreskin.
The condition arises when the foreskin is pulled back beyond the glans and then remains stuck in this position. This causes a constriction of blood flow to the distal part of the penis, resulting in swelling, pain, and potential complications if left untreated. Paraphimosis is considered a medical emergency, as the prolonged compression can lead to tissue damage and necrosis if not promptly addressed.
Symptoms of paraphimosis include pain, swelling, and difficulty in returning the foreskin back to its normal position.
Treatment for paraphimosis usually starts with manual reduction of the foreskin by gently applying pressure to the swollen area. If this fails, medical professionals may administer local anesthesia, provide lubrication, and attempt to push the foreskin back into its normal position. In severe cases, if other treatment methods fail, a surgical procedure called a dorsal slit may be performed to alleviate the constriction and resolve the condition.
To prevent paraphimosis, maintaining good personal hygiene is essential, as is avoiding forcefully retracting the foreskin beyond its natural range of motion. Regular evaluation by a healthcare professional is also recommended to ensure proper foreskin health and to address any concerns promptly.

The word "paraphimosis" comes from the combination of two Greek words: "para" meaning "abnormal" or "beside" and "phimos" meaning "muzzle" or "restraint". Hence, paraphimosis can be understood as an abnormal condition or constriction of the foreskin, usually referring to the inability to retract the foreskin back over the glans (head) of the penis after it has been pulled behind the glans, leading to medical complications.
