The parotid glands are responsible for producing saliva, which aids in the digestion of food and helps keep the mouth moist. Panotitis can occur due to various reasons, including viral or bacterial infections, such as mumps, which is the most common cause. Other less frequent causes may include trauma, autoimmune diseases, or obstructions in the ducts of the gland.
Symptoms of panotitis typically include pain and swelling on one or both sides of the face near the parotid gland. The affected area may be tender to touch, and swallowing or opening the mouth wide can worsen the pain. In some cases, there may be accompanying symptoms like fever, headache, or enlarged lymph nodes.
Diagnosis of panotitis involves a physical examination, wherein the doctor checks for signs of inflammation and tenderness in the parotid gland area. Imaging tests, such as ultrasound or CT scan, may be conducted to assess the extent of infection or to rule out other underlying conditions.
Treatment for panotitis aims to alleviate symptoms and address the underlying cause. Mild cases may resolve on their own with pain relievers, warm compresses, and adequate hydration. However, severe or persistent cases may require antibiotics if a bacterial infection is present. In some instances, surgical intervention may be necessary to drain abscesses or remove obstructions causing the condition.
