It belongs to the Haramiyida order and is classified as a traversodontid, which were a diverse group of herbivorous mammal-like reptiles that lived alongside dinosaurs. The name "oudenodon" is derived from the Greek words "oudèn" (no) and "odous" (tooth), which refers to its distinguishing feature of lacking teeth.
The most notable characteristic of Oudenodon is its specialized jaw structure. While it had a toothless beak, it possesses several sets of grinding teeth in its cheek region. These grinding teeth were likely used to process plant material as an adaptation for its herbivorous diet. Oudenodon likely had a small body, measuring around 20 centimeters in length, and it likely had adaptations for burrowing and digging, which is inferred from the structure of its forelimbs.
The remains of Oudenodon have been found in several locations, including South Africa and Lesotho.
