This condition often results in low bone density and decreased bone strength, leading to easy fractures even with minimal trauma or sometimes without any injury at all. Pseudoglioma, on the other hand, is a condition that affects the eyes, mimicking symptoms similar to those seen in glaucoma. It is characterized by the appearance of a cloudy, white, or hazy lens, leading to reduced vision or even blindness.
OPB ORA is inherited in an autosomal recessive pattern, meaning that both copies of the gene responsible for the condition must be mutated for an individual to be affected. The gene associated with OPB ORA is called LRP5 (low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 5). Mutations in this gene disrupt the normal functioning of LRP5, a protein that plays a crucial role in bone and eye development. As a result, individuals with OPB ORA experience significant bone fragility and vision problems.
Due to its rarity and specific combination of symptoms, accurate diagnosis and specialized medical management are essential for individuals with OPB ORA to prevent fractures, manage vision loss, and address other associated complications.
