Onager refers to a wild donkey-like animal found in various regions of Asia, specifically in the arid and semi-arid regions. Scientifically known as Equus hemionus, the onager belongs to the same genus as domesticated donkeys and horses. The name "onager" is derived from the Greek term "onagros," which means "wild ass."
The onager possesses a sturdily built body with a height ranging from 1 to 1.4 meters at the shoulder. Its coat color varies from sandy to reddish-brown, aiding in efficient camouflage within its natural habitats. The animal's distinguishing features include long ears, a tufted tail, and slender legs with hooves adapted to withstand challenging terrains such as deserts.
Onagers are predominantly herbivorous, feeding on a variety of vegetation, including grass, leaves, and wild fruits. Due to their ability to survive with minimal water intake, onagers are well-suited for desert environments, where they often form small herds led by a dominant male.
Historically, onagers were utilized by humans for various purposes, including transportation, mainly as pack animals.
