Old Church Slavonic (also known as Old Bulgarian or Old Slavic) is an ancient Indo-European language that was once used as a liturgical and literary language in several countries of Eastern Europe. It is the earliest recorded Slavic language and a predecessor to the modern Slavic languages.
This linguistic variety emerged between the 9th and 11th centuries in the region of the First Bulgarian Empire and the Great Moravia Empire. Primarily based on the local Slavic dialects, Old Church Slavonic was further influenced by Greek and to a lesser extent by Latin. It was closely associated with the spread of Christianity and the activities of Saint Cyril and Saint Methodius, who are believed to have developed the language for the purpose of translating religious texts, particularly the Bible, into the vernacular of the Slavic peoples.
Old Church Slavonic exhibits a highly inflected grammar system, with complex declensions and conjugations. Its alphabet, known as Glagolitic, was later replaced by the Cyrillic script, which is still used today in many Slavic languages.
