Oesophagoscopy is a medical procedure used to visually examine the inside of the oesophagus, also known as the food pipe. It is a diagnostic technique commonly performed by a gastroenterologist or an otolaryngologist using an instrument called an oesophagoscope.
During an oesophagoscopy, the patient is typically placed under local anaesthesia to numb the throat or may receive general anaesthesia to induce sleep. The oesophagoscope, a flexible or rigid endoscope with a light source and a camera, is carefully passed through the mouth or nose into the oesophagus. Most patients can resume their regular activities shortly after the procedure, although temporary throat discomfort may be experienced.
