These tumors consist of a disorganized mixture of dental tissues, including enamel, dentin, and cementum. There are two primary types of odontomas: compound and complex. Compound odontomas consist of numerous small tooth-like structures, resembling miniature teeth. In contrast, complex odontomas are composed of irregularly shaped masses of dental tissues that do not resemble normal teeth.
Odontomas are often asymptomatic and may remain unnoticed unless they interfere with tooth eruption or cause other dental problems. In some cases, they can lead to tooth impaction, delayed eruption, or crowding of adjacent teeth. Treatment typically involves surgical removal of the tumor and affected tooth or teeth, if necessary, to alleviate any associated symptoms or prevent complications.
