The Ocellated Turkey, scientifically known as Meleagris ocellata, is a species of large, ground-dwelling bird belonging to the Phasianidae family. This species is characterized by its medium to large size, measuring approximately 70-80 centimeters (28-31 inches) in length and weighing around 2-4 kilograms (4.5-9 pounds). It possesses a striking appearance, with males displaying a mix of iridescent blue, green, and copper feathers on their body, as well as a fleshy, bright blue head, adorned with nodules or bumps. Females, although less colorful, showcase beautiful shades of brown and tan, with white-tipped feathers.
The Ocellated Turkey is notable for the prominent, circular, or eye-shaped spots, known as ocelli, located on its tail feathers. These distinct markings give the species its name. Additionally, both males and females have a fleshy, red-colored dewlap, which extends from the base of the beak and contributes to their overall attractiveness.
Primarily herbivorous, the Ocellated Turkey feeds on a variety of fruits, seeds, insects, and small vertebrates. It spends most of its time on the forest floor, using its strong legs to run swiftly and its wings to take short flights when necessary.
