NVIS stands for Near Vertical Incidence Skywave. It refers to a radio propagation technique used for communication over relatively short distances, typically between 0 and 300 miles. The term "near-vertical incidence" signifies that the radio waves are emitted at a high angle (between 60 and 90 degrees) towards the sky and then reflected back to the Earth's surface. This technique allows for effective communication in mountainous areas, dense forests, or other terrains with significant obstacles that hinder direct line-of-sight communication.
The NVIS method utilizes frequencies within the high frequency (HF) range, specifically between 2 and 30 MHz. By directing radio waves almost vertically upwards, they bounce off the ionosphere layer known as the F2 layer, which causes them to be reflected back to Earth with very little range loss. This enables communication coverage over a circular area with a radius of approximately 100-300 miles around the transmitter, making it ideal for tactical military operations, emergency communications, and short-range communications in rural or isolated regions.
The NVIS technique provides reliable communication without the need for extensive infrastructure or reliance on satellite networks. This makes it particularly useful in scenarios where conventional line-of-sight communication or long-range HF propagation methods are impractical or unavailable. NVIS has been widely employed by military organizations, disaster relief teams, and amateur radio operators to establish reliable communication links in situations where other forms of communication may be disrupted or inaccessible.
