NSCLC stands for Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer, which is a type of malignant tumor that originates in the lung tissues. It is the most common form of lung cancer, accounting for approximately 85% of all lung cancer cases. NSCLC is further classified into several subtypes based on the types of cells present in the tumor, including adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and large cell carcinoma.
Unlike Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC), NSCLC tends to grow and spread at a slower rate. It usually occurs in people who are older than 40 years and is strongly associated with smoking, although non-smokers can also develop NSCLC. The symptoms of NSCLC might include chronic cough, chest pain, shortness of breath, hoarseness, weight loss, and recurring respiratory infections.
Diagnosis of NSCLC typically involves a combination of imaging tests, such as X-rays and CT scans, along with a biopsy to obtain a tissue sample for analysis. Treatment options for NSCLC depend on several factors, including the stage and extent of the disease, the patient's overall health, and individual preferences. Common treatment approaches may include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy.
Despite advancements in treatment, NSCLC prognosis varies on a case-by-case basis, with later stages having a lower survival rate. State-of-the-art research and clinical trials are continuously being conducted to improve diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment options for NSCLC patients.
