A nasal sinus refers to the air-filled cavities located within the bones surrounding the nasal cavity or nasal passages. These hollow spaces are lined with a mucous membrane that produces mucus to help moisten and filter the air that is inhaled through the nose.
There are four pairs of nasal sinuses, including the frontal sinuses, located in the forehead area above the eyes; the ethmoid sinuses, found between the eyes and behind the nose; the sphenoid sinuses, situated deep behind the nose and eyes; and the maxillary sinuses, which are the largest and located in the cheekbones on either side of the nose. Each sinus connects to the nasal cavity through small openings known as ostia.
The nasal sinuses serve several important functions. They help lighten the weight of the skull, improve vocal resonance, and increase the surface area of the nasal cavity to enhance the sense of smell. Additionally, they contribute to the production and drainage of mucus, which helps to trap and remove foreign particles, bacteria, and viruses from the air we breathe.
When the nasal sinuses become inflamed or infected, a condition known as sinusitis occurs. This can result in symptoms such as nasal congestion, facial pain or pressure, headache, postnasal drip, and a reduced sense of smell. Treatments for sinusitis can range from over-the-counter medication to alleviate symptoms to antibiotics for bacterial infections or in severe cases, surgical intervention to open and drain the sinuses.
