Myxoedema is a medical condition characterized by severe hypothyroidism, resulting in the swelling and thickening of the skin, often seen particularly in the face and the lower legs. This condition occurs due to a deficiency of thyroid hormones, which are responsible for regulating various metabolic processes in the body.
In myxoedema, the decrease in thyroid hormone levels leads to a reduction in the metabolic rate, resulting in a range of symptoms. These symptoms may include fatigue, weight gain, dry skin, hair loss, sluggishness, depression, and sensitivity to cold temperatures. The accumulation of fluid in the tissues results in puffy or swollen facial features, especially around the eyes and lips, as well as swelling in the extremities, particularly the lower legs.
This condition is typically caused by an autoimmune disease known as Hashimoto's thyroiditis, which results in the destruction of the thyroid tissue. Other factors, such as certain medication use, radiation treatment, or previous thyroid surgery, may also contribute to the development of myxoedema.
Diagnosis is made through blood tests that measure the levels of thyroid hormones, such as thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), as well as thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). Treatment involves the daily administration of synthetic thyroid hormone replacement medication to normalize hormone levels and alleviate symptoms.
