Multiple Symmetrical Lipomatosis, also known as Madelung's disease or benign symmetric lipomatosis, is a rare condition characterized by the excessive growth of fatty tissue deposits in various parts of the body. This disorder typically affects middle-aged men who have a history of alcohol abuse, but cases have also been reported in women and non-alcoholics.
The condition is called "multiple" because it involves the growth of numerous lipomas, which are noncancerous, benign tumors made up of fat cells. These lipomas tend to develop symmetrically, meaning they occur on both sides of the body in a similar pattern. Commonly affected areas include the neck, shoulders, upper arms, upper back, and abdomen. The lipomas can range in size from small nodules to large masses, which may cause pain or discomfort, impact mobility, and affect appearance.
The exact cause of Multiple Symmetrical Lipomatosis is currently unknown. However, it has been suggested that it may be linked to impaired fat metabolism, mitochondrial dysfunction, or genetic factors. Alcohol consumption has also been considered a contributing factor.
Treatment for this condition can be challenging, as the lipomas tend to recur even after surgical removal. Some management approaches include symptomatic relief, weight loss, and avoidance or reduction of alcohol consumption. In severe cases, surgical intervention may be necessary to remove or reduce the size of the lipomas. Nonetheless, therapy is primarily focused on managing symptoms and improving quality of life.
