The Moros test, also known as the startle reflex or the falling response, is a neurological examination method used to assess the integrity of the normal neuromuscular response in infants. The test derives its name from Ernst Moro, an Austrian pediatrician who developed the methodology in the early 20th century.
In the Moros test, the examiner quickly lowers the infant's upper body backward while providing support to the head and neck. The test is typically performed when the baby is in a supine or semi-supine position. Normal newborns will instinctively respond to this sudden movement by adopting an involuntary protective reflex, often called the Moro reflex.
The presence of a positive Moro reflex is evaluated by the examiner observing the infant's response, which usually includes initial extension and abduction of the extremities followed by a contraction or flexion of the limbs. A normal Moro reflex suggests that the infant's nervous system is developing appropriately.
The Moros test is especially important in the evaluation of newborn neurologic function, as the absence or asymmetry of this reflex may indicate underlying neurologic conditions, such as brachial plexus injuries, cerebral palsy, or spinal cord abnormalities.
