The MNLF, an acronym for the Moro National Liberation Front, refers to a political and armed rebel group advocating for the rights and self-determination of the Muslim Filipino population, particularly in the southern region of Mindanao in the Philippines. The organization's primary goal is to establish an autonomous region or an independent state for the Moro people.
Emerging in 1971 under the leadership of Nur Misuari, the MNLF has been actively involved in armed conflict with the Philippine government, fighting for Muslim rights, social justice, and an end to perceived marginalization. Its struggle arose from historical grievances, discrimination, economic disparities, and political repression faced by the Moro people. The organization's members include mostly Muslim Filipinos who seek to achieve their aspirations through peaceful negotiations, diplomatic means, and, at times, armed rebellion.
The MNLF experienced a significant turning point in 1996 when they signed a peace agreement known as the Final Peace Agreement, which led to the establishment of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM). However, ideological and strategic divisions within the MNLF emerged, causing a splinter group called the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) to form in 1977.
While the MNLF continues to exist as an influential political force, its activities have significantly decreased since the signing of the peace agreement. The organization represents the commitment of the Moro people to seek fair political representation, economic development, and cultural preservation within the region.
