The acronym MMAR stands for "Marihuana Medical Access Regulations." It refers to a set of regulations introduced by the government of Canada in 2001, which established a legal framework for the cultivation, possession, and distribution of medical marijuana. The MMAR aimed to provide Canadians with access to marijuana for medical purposes under specific conditions.
Under the MMAR, individuals who had obtained a medical document from their healthcare practitioners could apply to Health Canada for authorization to possess and grow limited amounts of marijuana for their medical needs. The regulations also allowed for designated producers to cultivate marijuana on behalf of authorized individuals who were unable to grow it themselves.
The MMAR imposed certain responsibilities and restrictions on both the authorized individuals and the designated producers. These included adhering to personal possession and production limits, following proper security measures, and complying with reporting requirements. The regulations also outlined procedures for manufacturing and distribution of marijuana-derived products.
The introduction of the MMAR marked an important step in recognizing the medical benefits of marijuana and providing a legal framework for patients to access it. However, it was later replaced by the Marihuana for Medical Purposes Regulations (MMPR) in 2013, which in turn was replaced by the Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations (ACMPR) in 2016 as the legal framework evolved to meet changing needs and address various concerns.
