Miosis, in the field of medicine and biology, refers to a condition characterized by excessive constriction of the pupil of the eye. The pupil is the black circular opening located in the center of the iris, which regulates the amount of light entering the eye. Miosis occurs due to the excessive stimulation or activation of certain muscles, leading to a reduced pupil size.
This condition can be a natural response to various external stimuli, such as exposure to bright light, severe pain, or certain drugs and medications. Miosis can also be an indication of an underlying medical condition or pharmacological effect. The excessive constriction of the pupil narrows or limits the amount of light that enters the eye, aiding the adjustment to intense lighting conditions and preventing excessive light from damaging the retina.
Furthermore, miosis can occur as a side effect of certain medications, including opioids, such as morphine or heroin, or other drugs that affect the nervous system. In such cases, the constriction of the pupils can be an indicator of drug use or abuse, which is why it is sometimes medically referred to as "pinpoint pupils."
