Mesosauria is an extinct order of aquatic reptiles that lived during the early Permian period, approximately 299 to 270 million years ago. Derived from the Greek words "mesos" meaning middle and "sauros" meaning lizard, Mesosauria is commonly known as the middle lizards. They are considered to be one of the earliest known fully aquatic reptiles, occupying freshwater habitats.
Typically measuring around 1.5 meters in length, Mesosaurs had elongated bodies with a streamlined shape, resembling modern-day reptiles like crocodiles and lizards. They possessed adaptations for an aquatic lifestyle, including paddle-like limbs, long muscular tails, and webbed toes for effective swimming and maneuverability in water.
Mesosaurs had a well-developed skull with sharp, cone-shaped teeth that they used to catch and feed on small aquatic prey, such as fish and crustaceans. Their diet was primarily carnivorous, indicating their role as top predators in their ecosystem.
