The maxillary artery is a major branch of the external carotid artery, originating in the neck region. It is responsible for the supply of oxygenated blood to various structures in the head and neck, primarily to the maxilla (upper jawbone) region.
Originating from the external carotid artery, the pathway of the maxillary artery begins at the level of the neck, where it passes through a triangular space formed by the hyoid bone, mandible, and several neck muscles. Upon reaching the jaw, it enters the infratemporal fossa through the pterygomaxillary fissure, a narrow opening between the maxilla and the lateral pterygoid muscle.
Once in the infratemporal fossa, the maxillary artery gives rise to numerous branches that supply diverse structures in the head and neck. These branches include the middle meningeal artery, which nourishes the meninges covering the brain, and the posterior superior alveolar artery, which provides blood supply to the maxillary posterior teeth and associated structures. The maxillary artery also gives off the infraorbital artery, which supplies the muscles, skin, and mucous membranes of the lower eyelid, upper lip, and side of the nose.
