Mary Astell (1666-1731) was an English philosopher, writer, and feminist theorist considered to be one of the first modern feminist thinkers. Her work focused on advocating for women's education, political and social equality, and the rejection of female subordination in society.
Born in Newcastle upon Tyne, Astell sought to challenge the prevailing societal views on women's roles and their limited access to education. She argued for the necessity of educating women and believed that women's natural intellectual capacities were equal to those of men. Astell strongly criticized the prevalent social norms that confined women to domestic duties and denied them opportunities for independent thought and self-development.
