The word "marathoner" is derived from the noun "marathon", which has its roots in Greek mythology. The word originated from the legend of the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC, during the Persian Wars.
According to the myth, after the victory of the Athenians against the Persians at the Battle of Marathon, a messenger named Pheidippides was sent to deliver the news to Athens. Pheidippides ran the approximately 25 miles (40 kilometers) from the battlefield to Athens to relay the message of victory.
