Luteinized unruptured follicle syndrome (LUFS) is a medical condition that primarily affects women during their reproductive years. It is characterized by the failure of an ovarian follicle to rupture and release the egg (ovum) during the menstrual cycle, leading to anovulation, or the absence of ovulation.
The menstrual cycle typically involves the growth and maturation of a follicle within the ovary, which eventually releases the egg for potential fertilization. However, in LUFS, despite the development and maturation of the follicle, it fails to rupture and release the egg. This results in infertility, as fertilization cannot occur without the release of the ovum.
The underlying cause of LUFS is not completely understood, but hormonal imbalances, particularly involving progesterone, are believed to play a role. Factors such as stress, excessive exercise, and certain medications can contribute to the development of this condition. LUFS may also be associated with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or other underlying reproductive disorders.
Symptoms of LUFS often include irregular or absent menstruation, as well as difficulty in conceiving. Diagnosis is typically made through a combination of medical history assessment, pelvic examinations, and hormone level monitoring. Treatment options depend on the underlying cause and individual patient factors. They may include lifestyle modifications, hormonal therapy, or assisted reproductive technologies such as in vitro fertilization (IVF).
