LNER stands for London and North Eastern Railway. It was a major railway company in the United Kingdom that operated between 1923 and 1948. LNER was formed during the 1923 Grouping Act, which combined various smaller railway companies into four big groups. The London and North Eastern Railway was created by the merger of several railways, including the Great Eastern Railway, Great Central Railway, Great Northern Railway, North Eastern Railway, and others.
As a result of this amalgamation, LNER became one of the "Big Four" railway companies in Britain. It served a vast area of the country, covering London, North East England, the East Midlands, and parts of Scotland. With its extensive network of tracks, LNER operated various types of trains, including express services, commuter trains, and freight trains.
LNER played a vital role in the transportation of goods and passengers during the interwar period. It was known for its high-speed express trains like the famous Flying Scotsman, which became an iconic symbol of British rail travel.
