Leydig cell tumor, also known as Leydig cell neoplasm, is a rare type of testicular tumor that arises from the Leydig cells. Leydig cells are specialized cells located in the testes and are responsible for producing the male sex hormone, testosterone.
A Leydig cell tumor is a benign or malignant growth that occurs when abnormal Leydig cells proliferate uncontrollably. While most Leydig cell tumors are benign, a small percentage can be cancerous. These tumors typically occur in adult men, with a peak incidence during the 30s and 40s.
The symptoms of a Leydig cell tumor may vary depending on the hormone production. Some individuals may experience signs of excessive testosterone production, such as increased facial and body hair growth, deepening of the voice, and enlargement of the penis or clitoris. In rare cases, the tumor may secrete other hormones, leading to additional symptoms like feminization or precocious puberty.

Diagnosing a Leydig cell tumor usually involves a thorough physical examination, blood tests to measure hormone levels, and imaging studies such as ultrasound or MRI to visualize the tumor.
Treatment for a Leydig cell tumor typically involves surgical removal of the affected testicle (radical orchiectomy). In cases where the tumor is cancerous or has spread, additional treatments such as radiation therapy or chemotherapy may be necessary. Regular follow-up examinations are essential to monitor for recurrence or metastasis. With early detection and appropriate treatment, the prognosis for Leydig cell tumors is generally favorable.
