When these bacteria are inhaled in aerosol form, they can cause infection in humans.
Legionnaires' disease is the more severe form of legionellosis, characterized by pneumonia-like symptoms. It typically presents with fever, cough, muscle aches, and shortness of breath. The word "Legionellosis" is derived from the bacterium Legionella, which was first discovered during an outbreak at the American Legion convention held in Philadelphia in 1976. The bacterial species responsible for causing the disease was subsequently named Legionella pneumophila. The suffix "-osis" in medical terminology is often used to indicate a disease or disorder.
