LCROSS stands for Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite. It is a NASA mission that involved a pair of spacecraft, namely the LCROSS spacecraft and the Centaur upper stage rocket, to impact the lunar surface in order to search for water ice in the permanently shadowed regions of the Moon.
The LCROSS mission was launched in June 2009 with the objective of confirming the presence of water on the Moon. The spacecraft followed a trajectory towards the Moon and made a controlled collision into a permanently shadowed crater near the lunar south pole. This impact created a debris plume that was then analyzed by instruments and sensors on board the LCROSS spacecraft as well as on Earth-based telescopes.
