Etymology of LAYSAN ISLAND
The word "Laysan" derives from the Hawaiian language. In Hawaiian, it is known as "Laysanapuahi" or simply "Laysan". The name is believed to be a combination of two words: "lay" meaning "gentle" or "calm" and "sana" which refers to various types of fishing gear. Therefore, "Laysan" could be translated to mean "calm fishing ground" or "quiet fishing spot". This name was likely bestowed upon the island due to its peaceful nature or potential for good fishing.
