Lake Michigan is one of the five Great Lakes of North America. It is the third largest by surface area and the second largest by volume among the Great Lakes, following Lake Superior. Etymology of LAKE MICHIGAN
The word "Michigan" comes from the Ojibwe (also known as Chippewa) word "mishigami", which means "great water" or "large lake". This term originally referred to Lake Michigan but eventually expanded to encompass the entire state of Michigan.
