A Kurloff cell, also known as a K-cell, refers to a specific type of cell found in the pituitary gland, which is a small gland located at the base of the brain. Named after the Russian pathologist Konstantin A. Kurloff, who first identified these cells in the early 20th century, Kurloff cells are classified as non-secretory cells due to the absence of secretory granules.
Kurloff cells possess distinct morphological characteristics that differentiate them from other cell types in the pituitary gland. They are usually large, measuring about 15-20 μm in diameter, and have a spherical or ovoid shape. These cells contain a pale, basophilic cytoplasm with a clear perinuclear area. Additionally, Kurloff cells display eccentrically located nuclei that are often indented or crescent-shaped.
Despite their presence in the pituitary gland, Kurloff cells do not have a well-defined function. While they are believed to be involved in certain physiological processes, their exact role remains unknown. It is hypothesized that Kurloff cells might have a phagocytic function, potentially responsible for removing cellular debris or ineffectual cellular elements.
