Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) refers to a rebel paramilitary organization that emerged in the late 20th century during the Kosovo War. The KLA, also known as the UCK (Ushtria Çlirimtare e Kosovës), was formed with the primary aim of fighting for the independence of Kosovo from Yugoslavia and later Serbia.
The KLA was comprised mainly of ethnic Albanians living in Kosovo and sought to establish an independent state for Kosovo, which they believed was being oppressed and marginalized by the Serbian government. The organization waged a guerrilla warfare campaign, employing tactics such as ambushes, bombings, and assassinations to confront Serbian forces.
During the height of the Kosovo War in the late 1990s, the KLA gained international attention and support, particularly from NATO countries that became involved in the conflict. This military intervention ultimately led to the withdrawal of Serbian forces from Kosovo and the establishment of a United Nations administration in the region.
The KLA, however, faced accusations of human rights abuses and war crimes committed against Serb, Roma, and other non-Albanian populations. After the war, the organization transformed into a political entity and its former leaders played prominent roles in the post-war governments of Kosovo. Today, the KLA is considered an important part of Kosovo's historical struggle for independence and remains a topic of debate and controversy.
