King snapper is a marine fish species belonging to the family Lutjanidae and the genus Lutjanus, commonly found in the tropical and subtropical waters of the Indo-West Pacific region. The name "king snapper" refers to an array of Snapper species, including but not limited to Lutjanus sebae, Lutjanus russelli, and Lutjanus johnii. This popular commercial and game fish is highly prized for its exquisite taste and is often sought after by anglers, making it a significant catch for sportfishing enthusiasts.
King snappers typically exhibit a reddish-pink to bronze coloring on their upper body, which gradually fades to a white or silvery shade on their lower belly. They have a streamlined body covered in scales, with a slightly forked tail and sharp canine teeth that assist in capturing prey. These fish generally grow to an average length of 75 centimeters (30 inches) and can weigh up to 13 kilograms (30 pounds), although larger individuals have been recorded.
King snappers are predominantly found in reef environments, where they form schools and seek shelter amidst coral reefs, rocky outcrops, or submerged structures. They are opportunistic carnivores, with their diet primarily consisting of crustaceans, fish, and smaller invertebrates.
