The Kamchatkan Sea Eagle, also known as the Steller's Sea Eagle (Haliaeetus pelagicus), is a large bird of prey belonging to the family Accipitridae. It is an iconic species native to the coastal regions of northeastern Asia, particularly Kamchatka Peninsula, the Russian Far East, and Japan.
With a wingspan of up to 7.5 feet (2.3 meters) and weighing around 20 pounds (9 kilograms), the Kamchatkan Sea Eagle is one of the largest and heaviest sea eagles in the world. It exhibits distinctive plumage, characterized by its striking black and white coloration. The adult birds have a stark black body and wings, while the head, neck, and tail are white. Juveniles, on the other hand, have a predominantly brown plumage until they reach maturity.
This magnificent avian species primarily inhabits coastal areas, including estuaries, bays, and nearby islands, where it can find its preferred prey of fish, particularly salmon. It is an opportunistic hunter, also targeting other birds, small mammals, and carrion if food sources are scarce.
