Etymology of JUNEAU
The word "Juneau" is derived from the native Iñupiaq Eskimo word "Tsantik'ooq", which means "the place where the summer is as winter". This name was given to the area by the indigenous Auke tribe who lived there for centuries before the arrival of European settlers. When English speakers began to settle in the area during the late 19th century, they anglicized the name to "Juneau" in honor of Joe Juneau, one of the prospectors who discovered gold in the region in 1880. The name Juneau was later adopted as the official name for the city and eventually became the capital of Alaska in 1906.
