JSRV stands for Jaagsiekte sheep retrovirus, which is a type of retrovirus that infects and causes a fatal lung cancer known as ovine pulmonary adenocarcinoma in sheep. It belongs to the genus Betaretrovirus and the family Retroviridae.
The JSRV virus is primarily found in sheep populations and is transmitted through respiratory secretions, particularly through close contact between infected and susceptible animals. The virus gains entry into the host's cells by binding to a specific receptor, which allows it to infect and integrate its genetic material into the host's genome, leading to the development of cancerous cells.
Infected sheep usually exhibit progressive respiratory symptoms such as coughing, difficulty breathing, and weight loss. As the virus replicates and spreads within the lungs, it results in the formation of tumors and disruption of normal lung function. Unfortunately, JSRV has no cure, and affected sheep usually succumb to the disease within a few months to a year of infection.
JSRV is of significant veterinary importance as it causes substantial economic losses due to decreased sheep productivity and increased mortality rates. Efforts to control the spread of JSRV include quarantine measures, culling of infected animals, and genetic selection for resistance. Furthermore, research into the virus's biology and pathogenesis is ongoing to develop effective diagnostic tools, treatment strategies, and potential vaccines for preventing ovine pulmonary adenocarcinoma.
