John George Nicolay was an American journalist, diplomat, and historian. He was born on February 26, 1832, in Bavaria, Germany, and immigrated to the United States with his family at a young age. Nicolay is primarily known for his role as the private secretary to President Abraham Lincoln.
Nicolay began his career as a newspaper reporter and editor, working for several publications in Illinois. He had a keen interest in politics and became acquainted with Abraham Lincoln during his early days as a lawyer in Springfield. When Lincoln ran for president in 1860, Nicolay joined his campaign, and after his victory, he was appointed as his private secretary, a position he held throughout Lincoln's presidency.
As Lincoln's secretary, Nicolay played a crucial role in the administration, handling paperwork, correspondence, and accompanying the president on various trips. He was also responsible for organizing Lincoln's papers and preserving historical records during his time in office.
