Johan Ernst Gunnerus (1718-1773) was a Norwegian bishop, naturalist, and founder of the Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters. He is primarily known for his contributions to the field of biology and his extensive research on the natural history of Norway.
Gunnerus was appointed Bishop of Trondheim in 1758 and held the position until his death. Alongside his ecclesiastical duties, he devoted himself to the study of natural sciences. Gunnerus conducted various expeditions across Norway, collecting and documenting specimens of plants, animals, and minerals. His meticulous observations and classifications significantly advanced the understanding of Norwegian flora and fauna.
Gunnerus' most significant work is his "Flora Norvegica," published in seven parts from 1766 to 1771. This comprehensive botanical treatise cataloged and described hundreds of plant species found in Norway. His attention to detail and accurate depictions of the plants made "Flora Norvegica" an essential reference for botanists worldwide.
Furthermore, Gunnerus' research extended beyond botany. He studied fossils, shells, and fishes, adding to the knowledge of these fields. In 1768, he founded the Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters (DKNVS), a society dedicated to advancing scientific knowledge. Today, DKNVS is one of Norway's oldest and most respected scientific institutions.
