James Abraham Garfield was the twentieth President of the United States, serving from March 4, 1881, until his assassination on September 19, 1881. Born on November 19, 1831, in Moreland Hills, Ohio, Garfield was a lawyer and educator before entering politics. He graduated from Williams College in 1856 and went on to study law. Garfield was elected to the Ohio State Senate in 1859 and served as a major general in the Union Army during the American Civil War.
Garfield’s presidency was short-lived, lasting only six months, but he made significant contributions to the nation during that time. He supported civil rights and worked to reform the civil service, advocating for merit-based appointments rather than political patronage. Additionally, Garfield advocated for a strong military and economy. However, his presidency was cut short when he was shot by Charles J. Guiteau, a disgruntled office-seeker, on July 2, 1881.
