IVM stands for In Vitro Maturation. It is a cutting-edge technique used in reproductive medicine for assisting women in becoming pregnant. In this procedure, immature eggs are collected from the ovaries and are subsequently matured outside of the woman's body in a controlled laboratory environment. Unlike traditional in vitro fertilization (IVF), where fully mature eggs are retrieved, IVM allows for the collection of premature eggs before reaching their full development.
IVM is a preferred option for certain groups of women, such as those with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), as they often produce a higher number of immature eggs. Additionally, women who wish to preserve their fertility for medical or personal reasons, including those undergoing cancer treatments, may benefit from IVM.
The collected immature eggs are cultured in a specific nutrient-rich media and allowed to mature over a period of time until they have reached the desired stage for fertilization. Once matured, the eggs can then be fertilized using conventional methods like intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) or through standard IVF procedures. The resulting embryos are then transferred into the woman's uterus, where implantation can occur, leading to a potential successful pregnancy.
