Schistosoma haematobium is a flatworm that primarily infects humans by penetrating the skin during contact with contaminated freshwater sources. Once inside the host's body, the larvae migrate to the blood vessels surrounding the bladder and reproductive organs. The female schistosomes release thousands of eggs daily, which can cause significant damage to the organs over time.
IVB symptoms may include hematuria (blood in the urine), painful or frequent urination, urinary infections, and, in severe cases, kidney damage. Chronic infection can lead to bladder and ureteral fibrosis, causing urinary obstruction and subsequent complications.
Diagnosis of IVB often involves examining urine samples for the presence of parasite eggs. Treatment commonly includes drug therapy with praziquantel, which effectively kills the adult worms, preventing further egg production and reducing organ damage.
