The Islamic Group of Uzbekistan, also known as the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU), is an extremist militant organization with origins in Uzbekistan, Central Asia. Founded in the early 1990s, the group emerged during the aftermath of the Soviet Union's collapse. It was primarily formed by Uzbek and Tajik Islamist fighters who had participated in the Afghan-Soviet War and sought to establish an Islamic state within Uzbekistan.
The IMU's ideology is rooted in a radical interpretation of Sunni Islam and a strong opposition to secular governments in the region. With the aim of overthrowing the Uzbek government and establishing an Islamic Caliphate, the group initially focused on insurgency activities against the Uzbek government, with sporadic attacks on security forces and officials.
Over time, the IMU expanded its activities and sought to establish regional support. It formed alliances with various global jihadist groups, such as the Taliban in Afghanistan and Al-Qaeda. This led to its transformation into a transnational organization, with members and cells operating across Central and South Asia.
The group has been linked to numerous acts of terrorism, including bombings, armed attacks, and kidnappings, aimed at destabilizing governments and spreading its extremist ideology. Its targets have included both domestic and foreign interests, posing a significant security threat to the region.
Due to international counterterrorism efforts, the IMU's strength has significantly diminished. Nevertheless, its remaining elements continue to pose a significant threat, as individuals with IMU affiliations are known to be involved in various extremist activities, including recruitment, radicalization, and participation in conflicts across different geographies.
