Insulin shock therapy is a medical procedure that was used in the past as a treatment for certain psychiatric conditions, particularly schizophrenia. Also known as insulin coma therapy (ICT), it involved the administration of large amounts of insulin to induce a state of hypoglycemia or low blood sugar levels in the patient. The purpose of this therapy was to produce a controlled coma-like state in the patient, which was thought to have a beneficial effect on their mental health.
During insulin shock therapy, patients would receive regular injections of insulin over a period of several weeks. This would cause their blood sugar levels to drop rapidly, resulting in symptoms such as confusion, disorientation, and seizures.
