The inert gases that produce narcotic effects hinder the transfer of electrical signals within the central nervous system. As a result, individuals may experience a range of symptoms that resemble alcohol intoxication or mild sedation. Common symptoms include impaired judgment, slowed reaction time, impaired coordination, and altered perception. In more severe cases, individuals may also experience disorientation, confusion, and memory impairment. These symptoms can potentially lead to dangerous situations underwater as divers may lose their ability to make informed decisions.
The onset and severity of inert gas narcosis are influenced by several factors, including the depth of the dive, the pressure of the gas mixture used, and the individual's experience and sensitivity to narcosis. This condition usually presents at depths below 30 meters (100 feet) and becomes more pronounced with increasing depth.
To mitigate the potential risks associated with inert gas narcosis, divers often utilize gas mixtures that have lower concentrations of inert gases, such as Nitrox or Trimix. Additionally, divers must undergo thorough training and practice to recognize and effectively manage the onset of narcosis while underwater to ensure a safe diving experience.
