It is considered to be a less severe form of mania, a symptom of bipolar disorder. Hypomanic episodes are typically distinct from normal functioning but do not cause significant impairment to an individual's daily life or social functioning, as seen in full-blown manic episodes.
During a hypomanic episode, an individual may experience a persistent state of euphoria, extreme optimism, and overconfidence. They may have rapid thoughts, increased talkativeness, and may become easily distracted. A reduced need for sleep is often observed, accompanied by a high level of energy that fuels restless and impulsive behavior. This state of heightened activity may lead to engaging in pleasurable but risky activities, excessive spending, or impulsive decision-making.
Despite its positive aspects, hypomania can also have negative consequences. The increased impulsivity and risk-taking behaviors may lead to strained relationships, financial troubles, or regrettable actions. Moreover, hypomanic episodes can precede or follow depressive episodes, resulting in a cycling pattern characteristic of bipolar disorder.
